Toronto, Canada, July 2010 – Sennheiser Canada, premier provider of aviation headsets as well as consumer and professional audio devices, is a proud supporter of the Royal Canadian Air Cadets and the Air Cadet League of Canada (ACLC).

The annual support that Sennheiser provides to the Air Cadets is threefold. First Sennheiser contributes an HME 110 aviation headset to each of the winners of the Industry sponsored Power Pilot Scholarships. Second, each of the twelve finalists at the Air Cadet Effective Speaking Competition is presented with the Sennheiser/Adidas PMX 680 earphones. Finally, perhaps least glamorously but most substantively, the cadets are provided with critical information regarding hearing loss induced by a lifetime exposed to loud ambient cockpit noise and how to mitigate these effects using Sennheiser noise reduction technology and other means.

Three cadets earn Aviation and Aerospace Industry sponsored Power Pilot Scholarships based on proficiency demonstrated on their flying examination results. “The HME 110 headset provides 24dB of passive noise attenuation along with industry leading audio performance,” stated Tim Mell, business director, aviation at Sennheiser Canada. “These young aviators will benefit from Sennheiser’s state-of-the-art technology during their flight training and hopefully throughout their aviation careers.”

Cockpit noise levels often exceed 85dB, and flight crews must endure this noise for long periods of time. “Hearing damage is a very real danger for pilots,” said Jean Langlais, president of Sennheiser Canada, and also a licensed pilot. “Close to 50% of pilots at age sixty have diagnosable hearing loss, compared to only 15% of the general population at the same age.” Sennheiser’s proprietary active noise reduction technology, Noisegard™, dramatically reduces cockpit noise, enhancing the crew’s ability to hear alarms or other important audio signals while improving the clarity of radio communications. Noisegard is currently in use on the flight deck on over 180 airlines.

In keeping with the Air Cadet’s focus on leadership and citizenship, the twelve Air Cadet League Provincial/Territorial Committees select winners from the thousand of participants in Effective Speaking Competitions at the local Squadron and Wing levels. The twelve winners come together in the National finals held during the ACLC’s Annual Meeting. Sennheiser awards the winners with a PMX 680 earphone. Designed to provide impressive performance under intense conditions, the PMX 680 is not only a benefit during cadet physical fitness training but serves as a poetic ode to each finalist’s gift for public speaking.
